Why Certificate of Deposit (CD) Yields Have Been So Low, for So Long...

In case you've been wondering why the annual percentage yields (APY) on CD's have been extremely low for so long, the answer is simple: The Fed.

Why do people looking for the safest investments hate it when the Fed keeps rates as low as they can go for a long time?  Because the returns are paltry.

Here a perfect example: Let USAA Federal Savings Bank hold onto $1,000 of your money for 7 years, and your return is $28.04.

NB: USAA Bank also offers Jumbo and Super Jumbo CD's, with $95,000 and $175,000 minimum deposits, respectively.
